Globalization of Cultural Heritage
Question: Discuss about the Globalization of Cultural Heritage. Answer: Introduction The current era is the era of technologies. The development of ICT (Information and Communications Technology) has changed the life styles of people. Now, people use technologies to perform their daily activities in an effectual and a quick manner. Along with this, the advanced technologies have become the major source of leisure for the people. In past years, television and radio was the major resource of entertainment for the people. They get all the news related to the nation through the television and radio media. Lots of things were complicated for the people at that time period. They were unable to obtain latest update at any time and at every place. It was because of this type of media was not pocket-friendly. They need to reach at the location to get the information. But, the development of ICT has changed lives of people. In current, they can get news and information at any time and every place. They can interact with the people in an ease way. Moreover, social media such as : Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc. also reduce the distance between people (Kavanaugh, Sheetz, Skandrani, Tedesco, Sun Fox, 2016). In addition to this, this research essay is helpful to discuss the use of media and ICT in the daily life of people. Furthermore, this essay is also useful to analyze the effects of media and ICT on the family, community, and society as a whole. Discussion of Murrows/ Wartellas statements It is well know that, television media was used by the people before the development of advanced technologies, ICT, and social media. In past years, television was very important in the lives of people. There are lots of researchers or authors who provide their views on the importance of television. In the words of Edward R. Murrow, the device (television) can teach as well as illuminate the people (Shedden, 2014). Moreover, it also can encourage the people. The instrument performs according to the determined limits of the people. Otherwise, it is only wires as well as lights in a box. The author Murrow said that it is a major gadget that has a positive effect on the lives of people. If an individual uses this media effectively then he/she can get success in each and every area of his/her life. On the other hand, if a human being does not make appropriate use of the instrument then it is only a set of wires and worthless to the people (Barkin, 2016). In addition to this, the author Wartella provided totally different views. Wartella is not agreed with the statement of Edward R. Murrow. The main reason behind it is that Murrow is in the support of the television. But, Wartella is against the television media. In the words of Wartella, the instrument (television) is harmful for the people. It generated fear and terror in the minds of people (Wartella, 1996). Furthermore, Wartella stated that, television can bring cruelty into the world. Television media can destroy the moral culture of the people. In this way, it can be assumed that the television media has become the major subject of debate for the people or researchers. On the other hand, it should also be noted down that, the advanced technology has changed the mentality of people. Moreover, due to the development of ICT, the current era is considered as the revolutionary period. There are a lot of different that can be seen between the duration of 1997-2016 (Hargrave Livingsto ne, 2009). In current, the technology (media, ICT, Internet, etc.) has become an essential part of the daily life of the people. Use of Media and ICT in Daily Life of People In the views of Collin, Rahilly, Richardson, Third, (2011), media and ICT has a major effect on the daily life of the people. ICT is a major term that takes in each and every device as well as application that is related to communication. For example, ICT involves television, radio, satellite systems, computer, cellular phones, network hardware software, etc. as devices of communications. Apart from this, distance learning, video-conferencing, and so on are the other applications or services used by ICT to perform an effective communication among the people. The media and ICT are not only useful for the personal life of the people; but they are also beneficial for the professional life of the people. Nowadays, most of the business organizations or multinational companies are only depend on the advanced technologies to expand their businesses at the global level. The use of media and ICT has made the lives of people very simple or effortless (Wessels, 2009). Moreover, people cannot ignore the use of media and ICT in their daily life. On the other hand, Roberts, Koliska (2014) state that, in current, each and every sector such as: education, banking, business, etc. makes the use of technology for the growth. Foe case, it should be noted down that, in current, students use E-learning and distance education to compete their educations. E-learning has become a major part of the life of the people. The main reason behind it is that, with the help of this, they can access books or websites to get their desired information. They do not need to go schools, colleges and libraries to read the books. Apart from this, there is no need to spend a huge amount of money to buy the books. E-learning plays a major role to save the time as well as money of the students. In addition, with the help of e-learning, student and lecture can make direct communication with each-other. They can get the desired information and also can sort out their problems. E-learning has reduced the distance between teacher and student. Moreover, studen ts have the internet to obtain more information related to their learning (Kenning, 2007). In the way, media and ICT has become a critical part of the life of students. Along with this, Yoon (2016) affirms that, the use of media and ICT has brought radical changes into the banking sector. In other word, it also can be said that, people can use the internet to perform their banking functions in an effectual and accurate manner. They do not need to stand in a queue to executive banking functions. For example, with the help of online or internet banking, they can check and transfer their funds. Moreover, they can also receive day-to-day update related to their accounts. They can make fixed deposits by the internet banking. Apart from this, because of the advanced technologies, there is no need to go to banks to withdrawal the money. Now, they can make use of ATM machines to withdrawal their required amount (Yoon, 2016). In addition, with the help of E-banking, people can pay their utility bills such as: electricity bills, telephones bills, and so on in an easy way. They can book tickets if there are planning any journey. There is no need to go at ticke t counters to purchase the tickets. People can also pay examination fees with the help of E-banking. For this reason, it can be believed that, the media and ICT have their importance in the daily life of the people. In the same manner, Line, Jain Lyons (2011) articulate that, business corporations make use of E-commerce to sell their products or services to customers online. Amazon.com, Inc., eBay Inc., Flipkart, and so on are the examples of such corporations that only use E-commerce for the success and growth of the business. Along with this, because of the development of technologies, there is no need to go into the markets and waste the whole day to buy a preferred product. People can visit websites of the particular companies to purchase products or services. They can make an effective comparison among the products or services of the companies. Moreover, with the help of media or technology, people can collect information related to a product at one place. They can make differences among the brands, prices, colors, etc. to buy their desired products (Line, Jain Lyons, 2011). In this way, with the help of advanced technologies, people can do their shopping by one click only. The online sho pping saves the time and money of the people. Hence, the increased use of technology is very much clear in the daily life of people. On the other hand, according to Hagen Nayar (2014), the business has become online due to the development of technologies. Businesses firms also use the internet and social media sites such as: YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc. to promote their products and services. The main reason behind it is that people spend their most of times on the internet or social media. If they see any attractive advertisement of any company then they show their interest in the purchase of that product or service. For case, it should be noted down that, sometimes, people purchase a product because of the companies are offering heavy discounts on the purchase of the products or services. They may use the products themselves or also gift to their loved ones. Moreover, currently, people do not like to go at shops to buy mobile phones, laptops, garments, gifts, jewellery, and all the other things that fulfill the needs and wants of the daily life of the people. They only depend on the technologies to buy all the things (Hagen Nayar, 2014). In this way, the use of the media and ICT can be seen in the daily life of people. People believe that without the technologies, their lives are incomplete. For this reason, it can be said that, the media and ICT are essential parts of the life of people. Nobody can ignore the use of the media and technology in the daily life of people. Effects of Media and ICT on the Family, Community, and Society as a Whole The effects of media and ICT on the family, community, and society have become a major subject of debate for the researches. Some are in the favor of media and ICT. But, others are against the media and ICT. In other words, it also can be said that, some people provide support to the statement of Edward R. Murrow. Other people are in the favor of Wartellas statement. On the whole, it can be assumed that, media and ICT have both positive and negative effects on the family, community, and society as a whole. In the views of Colombo Carlo (2015), media and technology have numerous positive effects on the family, community, and society. In other words, it also can be said that, the advanced technology has a major impact on society as a whole. The integration of new media technology into social settings is having a major effect on social interaction between people. Moreover, media and ICT play a major role to increase communication among families, societies, and communities. The new media technology brings family members and generations together. The new media is playing a significant role in order to unite the people, family, and society. It is developing strong relationship among the people of the society (Frau-Meigs, 2011). In addition, it also can be said that, the media and ICT are beneficial for the overall development of people, families and societies. Apart from this, ICT and media are used to communicate and keep in touch with citizens in our local societies or communities. Video Conferencing, Mobile Phones, Social Networking, Emails, etc. are the major sources of communication under the new media technology. On the other hand, Duma Monda (2013) state that, with the help of the new media technology, people stay in connection with their families and societies. In the past time period, people need to go at their home to meet the members of the family. But, now, they can make video calls to see and talk with the family members at any time and place. Moreover, because of the development of ICT, people have become stress free and also can do their works effectively. ICT is helpful for the big and busy families. They can stay connected with each other. No matter where they are living. Also, parents may have an eye on their children. They would be able to see that what their children are doing. Moreover, they can easily reach kids if there are in a problem or an emergency situation (Volkmer, 2012). In this way, it can be believed that, media and ICT have positive effects on the family, society, and community. The new media connects all the people all together for the social welfare and happines s. Apart from this, Sharaievska (2013) contend that, the media and ICT are influencing the family, community, and society in a negative way. There are numerous reasons behind this. For case, the major reason is that people spend a lot of time on the internet and do not give proper time to their families and local communities. Moreover, the researchers believe that, the increased use of technology has increased loneliness in the life of people. Also, by using computers to converse, people spend less time in meeting or also do not like to be familiar with the other people. This thing is dangerous for the society. The new media technology has reduced the progress of civilization. It has increased the privatization within family. In addition to this, Ahn (2011) also provides support to the views of Sharaievska (2013). They believe that the new media and ICT play a major role to keep families at a distance. It is because of all the people of a family are busy on their phones and laptops. As a result, the family is together physically not mentally. They do not have time for one another. The people do not give attention to each other. They give more attention to their text messages, emails or phone calls. Apart from this, due to the development of social media, people are unable to make differences between the casual relationships and meaningful relationships the. Youth are ditching to each other only for the fake and short relations (Livingstone Drotner, 2008). Moreover, social media also persuades people to be more open in relation to their personal lives. This thing can also be harmful for the while life of the people. In the same manner, Nwegbu, Eze Asogwa (2011) say that, media and ICT lead to addiction. People spend countless hours on the social networking sites. It diverts the focus as well as attention of people from the important tasks. The new media also reduces the motivational level of the public. Moreover, people rely on media/technology in place of learning the practical knowledge of the daily life. The authors further state that, the social media also affects the kids and youths. It is because of at times people share photos that contains aggression and sex. These things may spoil the behavior of kids and adolescents. It has a negative impact on the whole society because of these children and youth engage themselves in crime related behavior (Shoemaker Reese, 2013). Hence, it can be sad that, the media and ICT have negative effects on the family and society as a whole. Conclusion On the premise of the above discussion, it can be assumed that, the technology has changed the whole world. The use of media and ICT can be seen in the daily life of the people. They rely on technology or the internet to do their all the activities. On the other hand, it is also observed that, the media and ICT have both positive as well as negative impact on the family, community, and society as a whole. References Ahn, J. (2011).
